De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

Hand

Symptoms

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis or Syndrome refers to the painful wrist and thumb symptoms that occur on the thumb side of the wrist. Swelling and tenderness can also be seen at the base of the thumb.

How it occurs

The exact causes of de Quervain’s Tenosynovitis are still unknown. It is common in breastfeeding mothers and new parents (Mummy thumb, or Mummy Wrist), and also common in workers who do a lot of repetitive manual tasks (such as pinching, grasping, pulling or pushing) or office workers who do a lot of typing.

Treatment

We carry out a thorough assessment before starting any treatment. During your first visit, to help with pain relief,  we’ll also make you  a customised, water resistant and removable brace.

Following on the initial visit we’ll then advise you and help you with a strengthening and stabilisation exercise program.

The images below show our lightweight splint with and without a thumb support.
